1.8 — ANI / AGI / ASI: the 3 levels of ambition

To keep things from getting muddled, AI is classified by what it is capable of doing:

1. ANI — Narrow AI (Artificial Narrow Intelligence). This is 100% of today’s AI. Hyper-specialized in one task: playing chess, generating text, driving. Even ChatGPT, as versatile as it is, stays in this category: it manipulates language, it doesn’t “live” in the world.
2. AGI — General AI (Artificial General Intelligence). A machine able to understand and learn any intellectual task as well as a human. We’re not there. Experts are deeply divided on the date — even on whether it’s reachable at all. Treat it as a debated goal, not as a certainty.
3. ASI — Super AI (Artificial Super Intelligence). An intelligence that would far exceed the best human minds. Purely hypothetical as of today.

🟢 In plain words — ANI = today (strong at one thing), AGI = as versatile as a human (not here yet), ASI = far beyond humans (science fiction for now).

⚠️ Common mistake — taking ChatGPT for AGI because it “can do everything.” No: it handles language very versatilely but remains an ANI. Versatility within one domain is not generality.
