5.4 — AI in Logistics (the anticipation loop)
Managing thousands of trucks and millions of parcels:
- Demand forecasting: AI acts like a crystal ball. Predictive tools estimate which products will be most in demand, to optimize stock before orders even come in.
- Real-time reorganization: if a storm blocks a route, an agentic system analyzes the situation and instantly reconfigures delivery routes to avoid delays. (The ReAct loop from Level 3 — observe, reason, act — applied to the supply chain.)
🟢 In plain words — in logistics, AI is used to anticipate instead of react. It guesses what will sell (so the stock is ready) and recalculates routes when something unexpected happens (storm, blocked road), without waiting for a human to spot the problem.
🧩 Concrete example — a neighborhood greengrocer orders fruit every Monday. A forecasting tool tells him: ’‘during the heatwave week, double your watermelon order’’. He has the stock at the right time instead of running out of products or throwing away unsold ones. It’s the same logic as the giants — at a smaller scale. (Illustrative example.)
✅ In short
- Demand forecasting: prepare stock before orders come in.
- Real-time reorganization: recalculate routes in the face of the unexpected.
- Under the hood, it’s the ReAct loop (L3) — observe, reason, act — continuously.
