The Art of Talking to the Machine

Many people think AI is magic: just ask a vague question and get a miracle. False. AI is more like an extremely brilliant, ultra-fast intern who knows nothing about your company or your expectations. Give it vague instructions, it makes mistakes. Give it good instructions, it becomes formidable.

The craft of phrasing those instructions is called Prompt Engineering. Here are the golden rules for reliable results.

  • Build a structured prompt from 4 ingredients (Role, Context, Task, Format).
  • Choose between Zero-shot and Few-shot, and know what each is for.
  • Use Chain-of-Thought wisely — and know when it’s useless.
  • Make the AI explore several options (Tree-of-Thoughts) before it decides.
  • Avoid the classic pitfalls (negations, overconfidence, hallucinations).
  • Adapt your prompt to the three big assistants (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) and know which one to choose for the task.
