2.2 — Rule #1 — The recipe for a perfect prompt (structure)
🟢 In plain words — a good prompt is like a mission sheet handed to a new employee: who you are (Role), where you’re stepping in (Context), what I’m asking (Task), in what form to hand it back (Format). Fill those 4 boxes and the ambiguity disappears.
A good message to AI is never just one sentence. It contains 4 ingredients that remove ambiguity:
- The Role (the persona, the character it plays) — Tell the AI who it is. “You are a marketing expert,” “You are a tax lawyer.” This instantly changes its vocabulary and level of expertise.
- The Context — Give the background. (“We sell eco-friendly shoes for young urban dwellers.”)
- The Task — Explain precisely what to do, with strong action verbs (“write,” “compare,” “classify,” “summarize”).
- The Format — Say exactly how to present the answer. (“A bullet list,” “a table,” “under 100 words.”)
🔬 Before / after — the same need, two results.
- ❌ Vague: “Give me some post ideas for my account.”
- ✅ Structured: “[Role] You are a social media manager. [Context] Specialty coffee brand, 25-35 audience on Instagram. [Task] Propose 5 post ideas to launch a new roast. [Format] A table: idea · hook · suggested visual.”
The structured version is usable as is; the vague version returns platitudes you’ll have to rework. Same 30 seconds of writing, result 10× better.
🛡️ Anti-hallucination reflex (recall from Module 1: a hallucination is a false fact stated with confidence). Defuse it in the prompt: add “If you’re unsure or the information is missing, say so clearly instead of inventing” and, when relevant, “rely only on the provided text.”
⚠️ Common mistake — cramming everything into one catch-all sentence (“make me a nice professional marketing post”). The AI then has no role, no context, no format. The reflex: mentally separate the 4 ingredients, even in two lines.
✅ In short
- A solid prompt = Role + Context + Task + Format.
- Strong action verbs in the task (“write,” “compare,” “classify”).
- Tags (e.g.
<text>…</text>) separate your instructions from the content to process.- Add an anti-hallucination guardrail right in the prompt.
